Polish: Warszawa is the capital and largest city of Poland. It is located on the Vistula River roughly 370 kilometers (230 mi) from both the Baltic Sea coast and the Carpathian Mountains. Its population as of 2007 was estimated at 1,706,624, with a metropolitan area of approximately 3,350,000. The city area is 516.9 square kilometers (199.6 sq mi), with an agglomeration of 6,100.43 square kilometers (2,355.4 sq mi) . Warsaw is the 8th largest city in the European Union.

The beginnings of settlement in the Valley of Warsaw are dated to the tenth century. At the end of the thirteenth century, in the area where the Royal Castle stands, a new princely town was founded, that is, today’s Warsaw. The earliest note about Warsaw appears in written records from 1313. After Mazovian Princes had died heirless, Mazovia was incorporated into the Polish Crown. Since 1569, it had been a place where sessions of the Sejm of the Joint Polish Lithuanian Republic were held. After the fire of the Wawel Castle, King Sigismunt Waza III transferred permanent royal residence, courts and the Crown’s offices from Cracow to the extended Warsaw’s Royal Castle ... (more)
Warsaw Uprising The Uprising began on 1 August 1944, as part of a nationwide rebellion, Operation Tempest. It was intended to last for only a few days until the Soviet Army reached the city. The Soviet advance stopped short, however, while Polish resistance against the German forces continued for 63 days until the Polish surrendered on 3 October. (more)
Initially, it was a typical suburban baroque residence in a shape of Polish manor-house with oriels. With a shape from 1696 it represents the characteristic type of baroque suburban residence entre cour et jardin . Between 1720 and 1728 side wings were added (the author of the design: Giovanni Spazzio – main architect of Elżbieta Helena Sieniawska née Lubomirska). (more)
The way from the Central Railway Station leads to the Palace of Culture and Science – the tallest building in Poland (234.5 m), and, at the same time, the best known work of socialist realism, decorated with monumental realist sculptures. It houses cultural and scientific institutions, the famous Congress Hall and museums. From the 30th floor of the palace spreads a beautiful panorama of the city. (see whole tour)
The National Stadium will be located on the site of what is today the 10-th Anniversary Stadium. This is the largest construction project for Euro 2012. Matches planned to be held at the National Stadium in Warsaw include the opening match, one quarterfinal match, and one of the semifinal meetings. The designer of the National Stadium is the Germany-based JSK Architects. The firm has a large portfolio of projects done abroad - along with the German cities of Dusseldorf and Berlin, their buildings can be found in China and South Africa. The consortium is also known in Poland as the designers of Legia Warsaw's stadium and has also won the competition for Wrocław's Euro 2012 stadium. (more)
