Spodek (Saucer)

It is one of the first structures all over the world employing the principle of tensegrity. The 300 tones steel structure is joined with an external steel ring by means of 120 cables in a form of trusses bearing the roof.

The main hall shape resembles a flying saucer and that is the result of joining two basic functions of this structure: sports arena and show arena. The plans of two auditoriums are much different: the first one is designed for the arena central arrangement, the second one for a directional arrangement. A rink, a gym, and a hotel are adjacent to the arena and they are joined together with the so-called entresol.  Spodek hosts volleyball, basketball,  and ice hockey matches, as well as, music concerts, different events, scientific conferences, circus performances, and fairs.

  • Cubic volume of the whole structure is 338 732 m2
  • Floor space of the whole structure is 29 473 m2

The main arena

  • Cubic volume of the main arena 246 624 m3
  • Total floor space of the arena is 15 386 m2
  • Maximum height: 32 m;
  • Main floor dimensions: 45 × 60 m;
