Ścinawka Górna

Sarny Palace - Ścinawka Górna

In 1590, a manor-house had been erected in Sarny that was later seized, together with the whole property, from Protestant owners during the Thirty Years’ War. After the war, the property was bought by count von Götzen who established there his family’s residence. As a wealthy man he rebuilt the manor-house and made it a magnificent residence, proper for his title.  The palace was then rebuilt and redecorated several times; still, subsequent modernizations only beautified it.

The property of von Götzens increased gradually, and their residence was quite popular; especially, in the 19th century growing popularity of  tourism. In1840 only 75 people resided there; still, the settlement had two bleaching works, mangle, and brickyard. There were also several weaving plants. Currently, this is a rather tourist forsaken place. The yellow trail from Tłumaczów to Nowa Ruda leads through Sarny.

The palace complex is composed of; among others, the Renaissance manor-house from 1590, St. John of Nepomuk Chapel and farm buildings. The manor house was rebuilt several times and in the 30s of the 17th century, a staircase was added and an eight-side  tower was erected, as well as, several decorative architectural elements were added. More or less at the same time, the chapel was established with beautiful paintworks showing situations from St. John of Nepomuk’s life and propagating praise of von Gotzen family’s achievements. These were painted by Johann Franz Hoffmann. In 1762 another residential wing of the palace was built.  A granary with two Renaissance gables is worth noticing.
