Grodno

Grodno Castle, located in the north part of the Owl Mountains, at the top of Choina mountain (450 meters above sea level). According to traditional records it was built on Bolesław I the Tall's initiative in 1198 and extended by Bolko I at the end of 13th century. It was owned to the Świdnica and Jawor dukes until the year 1392. After incorporation of Duchy of Jawor and Świdnica in Bohemia, the castle was owned by Bohemian kings; afterwards, it became private property. In the 15th century the castle was inhabited by Silesian knight's families, often occupying themselves with robbery. In the years 1443-1450 it was a ruffianly stronghold of Jerzy Puczek. Later it belonged to, among others, the von Czettritz family, Christoph I Hoberg, Matthias von Logau, emperor Rudolf II, Bernhard baron von Funfkirchen, Georg von Kuhl and Georg Hohenzollern-Sigmarinen. In the second half of the 18th century it became deserted and gradually went to rack and ruin. In 1823 Johann Gustaw Gottlieb Busching, a professor from Wrocław, bought the seedy object and begun maintenance works. Stronghold's preservation was renewed after the war; the Regional Museum of Polish Tourist-Sightseeing Society was opened in 1965.
