Chorzow

 

Chorzów is a city in Silesia, southern Poland with around 114,680 (2006) inhabitants and an area of 33.5 km². Chorzów is situated on the Rawa river on the Silesian Highland in the heart of the Upper Silesian Industrial Area, 7 km north-west of Katowice. Chorzów is in the middle of Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union, the largest legally-recognized urban entity in Poland with a population of 2.2 mln. The population of the urban area in the conurbation around Chorzów is about 3.5 million.

 

Chorzow History

 

The location act issued on June 24, 1257 by Wladyslaw, the Duke of Opole and Racibórz, which granted the right of location of Chorzów (Chareu) settlement to the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulrchre from Miechów is regarded as the historical document that gave rise to Chorzów. Persuant to the bylaw of the City Council the City Festival celebrations mark the historic date. In the XIV century the village is known to have already been well established with a church and an inn. Two centuries later silver, iron and lead ore excavations had begun. (more)

Silesian Stadium

 

Silesian Stadium is a sport stadium located between Chorzów and Katowice, Silesia, Poland. It opened on 22 July 1956 and has since hosted crowds of over 120,000 for both football matches and motorcycle speedway world championships. It also hosts music festivals. (fot.: www.pl.wikipedia.org)
