Bielsko-Biała is located in south Poland, in Silesian Province, in Silesian Foothills of Beskind Mały and Śląski, over Biała River. It is a capital of Bielsko district, Beskid Mountains Euroregion, and also a main city of Bielsko agglomeration.Officially, Bielsko-Biała was established in 1st January 1951 from the connection between Bielsko in Cieszyn Silesia, of which the first mention derives from 1312, and Małopolska Biała established at the end of the 16th century. Between 1975 and 1998, the city was a capital of Bielsko Province.Bielsko-Biała functions as a main administrative, industrial, trade-service, academic, cultural and tourist center of the region popularly called Podbeskidzie. It is one of the industrially well-developed Polish cities. Domestically, it is an important route and rail junction.
According to the data derived from 30th June 2008, Bielsko-Biała has got 175 476 citizens (22nd place in Poland). The area of the city is 124,51 km2; (18th place in Poland).

The city of Bielsko-Biała was created on January 1, 1951 when the adjacent cities of Bielsko and Biała were unified. Bielsko, which for centuries belonged to the Duchy of Cieszyn, was founded in 1312. From 1457 the Biała river was the border between Silesia and Little Poland. Silesia belonged to Austria, Little Poland to Poland. In 1723 on the opposite bank of the river the city of Biała came into being. In 1772 Biała was annexed by Austria and included in the crownland of Galicia. In 1918 both cities became part of reborn Poland, though a significant part of the population was ethnic German. During World War II the city was annexed to the Third Reich and its Jewish population sent to Auschwitz. After the liberation of the city by the Red Army in 1945, the ethnic German population was expelled. (more)

Towering in the Bielsko-Biała city centre, the Castle is the oldest and largest construction of historical importance, erected in the old town of Bielsko. The oldest part of the Castle dates back to the 14th century. Over the next centuries the Castle gradually developed and transformed. It is a city castle in its nature, incorporated into the system of Bielsko fortifications from the beginning, at the same time providing their strongest section. (more)
